Previous FBI head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the response on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the case thrown out for various reasons including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was indicted soon after Trump pressured his top legal official to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the court they intended to file various legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a trial, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was first managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a government attorney who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the magistrate state his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not authorized a person at the agency to leak to journalistic entities information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and slow" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey published to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"We have understood for years that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

These allegations against James Comey came after the former president published on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
